Craniosacral Therapy for Babies and Children

Treatments for babies aim to help with a range of problems such as developmental and behavioural problems, feeding and sleeping issues which are due to unresolved birth processes and intrauterine difficulties.

As the bones of a baby are unfused they are more liable to distortion and as such at risk of impinging important developing structures like nerves and blood vessels.

Birth Trauma
Much of the birth process may be traumatic for a baby due to the sheer physical forces (compressions, whole body twists and rotations) and shock (overstimulation of the nervous system) that is induced.

Some of the trauma may resolve naturally but it is common to embody some of its effects throughout the rest of life even with a relatively smooth birth. Forceps, ventouse and other difficult or assisted births can cause significant health issues. For example and developmental difficulties.

Epidurals and painkillers can also affect the mother and baby’s behaviour and ability to bond.

Possible consequences of Birth trauma:

  • Brain damage
  • Autism/Asperger Syndrome
  • Learning/Developmental Delays/Difficulties
  • Hyperactivity
  • Asthma
  • Allergies
  • Colic
  • Pyloric Stenosis
  • Tantrums
  • Ear, nose and throat issues
  • Constipation and diarrhoea
  • Drainage issues – ear and excessive build up of mucus
  • Migraine
  • Eye Problems
  • Emotional Trauma
  • Hyperactivity
  • Epilepsy
  • Personality Disorder
  • Feeding difficulties
  • Weak sucking or lack of sucking
  • Floppiness

If the shock is not released from the baby’s system it becomes ingrained which can manifest as:-

  • Hypervigilance
  • inability to sleep
  • jerky movements
  • clenching of fists
  • hypersensitivity
  • aggravated startle reflex.

When mother’s health is compromised during the birth process e.g. in cases of pre-eclampsia (featuring high blood pressure) or there are complications such as cord around the neck or it is cut too early (umbilical shock)this can produce further physical restrictions as well as excessive shock in the baby.

Quick births and Caesareans that don’t involve the intensity of physical compression can induce excessive shock in the baby as it goes from water to air and from darkness to light too quickly for the nervous system to cope with.
